The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells— 44% no progress made here

A Princess in Theory was my morning commute read but I set it aside to read some thrillers. I’ll get back to it when I’m in a romance mood. I was reading The Island of Dr. Moreau with my family, but our schedules have been all over the place and we just started a new D&D game. I might have to finish it on my own.

RECENTLY READ

Pentagruel by François Rabelais  | ★★★★☆

I love this book. It’s ridiculous and grotesque, but so entertaining. This is not one of those boring classics.

Twelve Days of Christmas by Debbie Macomber   | ★★☆☆☆

This wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t great. The premise was interesting but the plot developed too quickly, which made it unbelievable. The MC is Christian and volunteers with the Salvation Army so it was hard not to constantly think about homophobia and transphobia…

Where They Found Her by Kimberly McCreight| ★★★☆☆

I have mixed feelings about this one. Like most books with multiple perspectives, some parts were more engaging than others and it would have made the book more engaging if the plot had been tightened a bit more. The mystery interesting and the twists managed to suprise me once or twice.

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers   | ★★★★☆

This one spent over 5 years unread on my shelves. Finally a YA fantasy where the badass assassin we are promised actually kills people. My favorite part of the world building is the religion. What could have been a gimmicky ploy ~daughter of Death~ turned into a complex system. I will continue the series eventually.

Sweet Little Lies by Caz Frear| ★★☆☆☆

I picked this one knowing nothing about it. I thought it might be a thriller based on the title and cover and I got a mystery. Close enough. The first 40% were a drag and I must have contemplated DNFing it at least 20 times. It pushed through and once it really got going I couldn’t stop reading. I had some issues with how it treated sex work and unethical police work so I dropped a star for that.

Sincerely, Harriet by Sarah Winifred Searle| ★★★★☆

I got an ARC of this one so I’ll post a full review closer to the release date (May 7), but while it was a bit too short, I really liked how it portrayed Harriet’s disability.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Sapphicaton is starting soon so I’ll have my TBR out shortly. None of those books are on audio so I will also be picking up some of my current Overdrive loans.

Under the Udala Trees by Chinelo Okparanta (I was wrong, this one counts towards Sapphicathon)
